Shopping

I took a walk along Michigan Avenue today. This is the main road along Chicago's shopping district. I visited a really cool Apple shop that had an internal glass staircase and all kinds of Apple products layed out on tables for you to play with.

After walking around for a while, a found a shopping mall. It has 7 levels of stores, but the funny thing is most of them are either clothing or jewellery stores, or some other wearable product. There are two department stores too, but they appear to be full of clothes. Americans appear to be very fashion focussed... Well it's a bit like that in Australia too. Maybe I am just a dag.

Pizza

There are a lot of fast food outlets that sell anything from pretzels to donuts to burgers, pizza, you name it. And everything comes in huge portions. I went to a pizza outlet to get some dinner and saw they sold it by the slice. I am trying to watch my weight, so I thought two slices would be plenty.. I was surprised to receive two boxes that had two "half" slices in each of them. Each of the "half" slices were around 30cm long and 10-15cm wide! I knew there was know way I could eat both "slices", so I gave one box to a homeless guy on the way back to my hotel. I still had trouble finishing the one slice.

I wonder how everyone here aren't the size of buses... Everything seems to be full of fat and suger, and everyone eats a lot of it! Perhaps they play a lot of sport. Football is very popular.

Bananas

I picked up some groceries the other day and saw bananas on special for $0.44/lb (~AUD$1.20/kg). It has been a while since I've seen them that cheap, so grabbed a bunch for the hotel. They are probably imported, but they sure tasted good. Dani has been buying lady fingers back home as a treat for lunch occasionally, so I haven't really been without. And bananas aren't my most favourite fruit but at least they are cheap and abundant over here.

Water

Another thing that Chicago has an abunance of is water. I took a walk around some of the parks in Chicago and came across a large water fountain. I later found out that this is the fountain shown at the start of each "Married with Children" episode. I am looking foward to taking Dani there when see gets here. About a block to the east of the fountain (over the highway) is Lake Michigan. I didn't get a chance to go down to the shoreline (too lazy to cross the highway), but from where I was standing it looked just like the ocean. A fresh water ocean. I'll take a closer look when Dani gets here.
